10 Questions.

I'm sitting here on my FIFTH snow day this year... it's getting crazy!  I love having the extra time, but I also really really like routine.  If only we were already all moved and I could be using this time to organize.  After yesterday's snow day was spent making pancakes, cleaning the bathroom, trying a new recipe, reading some of a good book, and finally taking a few minutes to shower, alas, I pursed the interwebs and found many great lists such as this...

According to this article, these are 10 questions you should be able to answer.  "Because the answers to these ten questions will help you discover the very best in yourself…"

1.  What would make you proud of yourself?

2.  How can you make a positive difference?

3.  What are you trying to accomplish and why?

4.  What are the roadblocks standing in your way?

5.  What’s the next step?

6.  What are your flaws and faults?

7.  What issues do you need to resolve with yourself?

8.  How are you burdening yourself?

9.  How have you celebrated your progress lately?
10.  What do you love about your life?
Sometimes it is a good idea to sit back and think about where you are going in life from a new perspective.  Marc and Angel's website always gets me thinking...

Have a good one.  And stay warm!

Some good advice.

My good friend, Cori (her birthday is TODAY!), sent this list along to our group of girlfriends.  It is just too good not to share.

"To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most requested column I've ever written.
My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:
1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.
8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.
12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.
13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.
15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.
16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.
19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.
20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.
21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.
22. Over-prepare, then go with the flow.
23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.
24. The most important sex organ is the brain.
25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.
26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?'
27. Always choose life.
28. Forgive everyone everything.
29. What other people think of you is none of your business.
30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.
31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
33. Believe in miracles.
34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.
35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.
36. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.
37. Your children get only one childhood.
38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.
40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.
41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
42. The best is yet to come...
43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
44. Yield.
45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift."

Move it Monday, farewell 2012!

What better way to send-off 2012 but with a Move-it-Monday post!

Last year in true list-fashion, I created some goals for my 2012, many of these resolutions related to health and fitness.  This year was definitely one full of changes and challenges, but did not go without many times 'savoring the sweet stuff'.  I'm so thankful for all of the blessings this life has given me so far in my 26 years.
via
Written January, 2012:

Less Stuff. Does moving away from all your stuff count?  We're definitely doing this, but not necessarily on purpose.  Crazy how life does that to you sometimes.
More Craft. Unfortunately, not so much.  There is a baby shower in the works for January though! ;)
More Moving. Um, yes! So proud of this goal.  Completed a 10-mile race, 5 mile race, 5K, 10K and TWO half-marathons.  And.... I liked it.
Less Spending. Not so much...
More Vacations. We went to Florida with my family in the hurricane we refer to as "Debby Downer".  I also spent a wonderful few days in Chicago with my parents-- a time I will surely treasure forever.
More Risks. Whoa.  When I wrote this goal, I didn't quite mean give-up-a-job-you-love-a-house-you-love-friends-you-love-for-living-with-mom-and-dad-risks.  But again, so worth it.  I feel so lucky to be closer to family these past few months.
More Outdoors.Yep! Lots of outdoor runs.
More Dates. Uh huh.
More Books. Besides 50 Shades of Gray and a book I'm reading for school, Willpower, not-so-much.  Bummer.
More Pictures. Since joining the Instagram frenzie-yes!
Less Processed Food. Definitely, but could still improve.
More Water. Yes, and no more soda!
More Sharing. Hopefully... going to be more aware of this goal for next year.
More People. I have met so many wonderful new co-workers!
Less Media. Maybe? Less TV, but probably more phone/computer-time.
More Fun.  Yep!
More Baking. Nope :(
More Calm. Not-so-much.... working on that one :)
Less Regrets. Yes!
2012
I'll be back tomorrow to welcome 2013 with a new list of resolutions.  Happy New Year everyone!

What I'm Loving Lately.

Sitting here on this Christmas Eve Eve with a full day ahead with no solid plans.  Slept in, gym checked off for the day, gingerbread cookies in the oven, pot roast in the crock pot and a quiet house.  Is this a joke?

1. Snow. Kansas had it's first snow of the season this week.  There is something about a fresh snow that is just magical.

2. Cooking... well, baking.  So far this holiday I've baked sugar cookies (twice!), brownie trifle, gingerbread cookies and pumpkin muffins.  Savoring the sweet stuff for reals.

3. Amazon.  This year I bought a bunch of gifts online.  I don't know why I haven't done this before... shipped straight to your door and it comes in a box?  I know I'm a little late on this game, but it's a good one.
4. Christmas Cards.  It's so fun to get pretty cards, especially the ones with photos in the REAL mail.  Next year I'll have to steal one of these clever ideas to keep them displayed.

1/2/3
5. Winter Break. My break started one day early this year because of a snow day.  And although I was happy for the snow, I was actually sad to miss the last day before winter break!  Not only were the kids going to be so excited, but the faculty had some sweet holiday plans for that day, too.  Oh well, I got lots of wrapping done, as well as some extra time with my mama.

6. Family. Speaking of mama, she's recovering from a little surgery this week.  I am so thankful for excellent nurses and doctors, and for good news before the holiday. We have lots of fun plans ahead these next few days. J's family has lots of babies that I'll get to snuggle with all day tomorrow, and my family will all be together for Christmas Day.  I can't wait to catch up with everyone.  It really is the best time of the year.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas!

At the moment.

:: Obsessing over...
Instagram see here.

:: Working on...
Balancing.  Not standing on one foot (although I could work on that, too), but balancing work, friends, family, husband, myself, workouts, etc.  Maybe I should consider less computer time? :)
Found this article that I've been trying to revisit each day. A definite must read about making priorities.

:: Thinking about...
Shopping!  I get about a bajillion emails all day long that tempt me with shiny, glittery goodies. Stop tempting me, Sephora!

:: Anticipating...
Seeing friends!  The holidays are an excellent excuse to make lots of party plans.  I'll be kicking it off right with an ugly sweater party this weekend and gingerbread house making!

:: Listening to...
Christmas music.  There's something wonderful about waltzing around in the morning to Jingles Bells.

:: Munching on...
Again with the holiday theme, peppermint tea, dark chocolate, peppermint Hershey's kisses.  Unfortunately, not all at once.

:: Thankful for...
The spirit of my students.  They sing and dance and jump around until my eyes are crossed but their spirit is contagious!  A good dose of 7th grade craziness warms me up and makes me smile.  That being said, I'm also thankful for Winter Break.

Hope you all are having a good week!

Perspective.

Warning: heavy stuff. :)

I've mentioned that there have been a lot of changes happening around this place, and I've tried to be honest about the hard decisions and tough stuff that goes along with that.  At the same time, I know that every one has their own story, their own hard times, and their own "tough stuff".  I don't want this to sound like a big post of whining and complaining, but I do want to remember what I was feeling and what I've learned going through this.  I'm trying to believe that things happen for a reason, and I know that you have to stay positive no matter what life throws your way.

This summer, doctors found a mass in my mom's colon.  They were "very confident" that the mass was cancer, stage 3 cancer at that.  My life, and everyone in my family's life, was turned upside down.  The first day, I was in shock.  We all were.  I didn't know what to say, what to feel, what to think.  I was numb.  The next two days were the worst, as I started to realize what the future could look like in the next few months.  I tried to stay strong, but really, it was the most scary news I had heard, ever.  Long story short, she had doctor appointments for 7 weeks before a final diagnosis was given.  The initial mass had shrunk; she was cancer-free.  Again, I was shocked.  Prayers answers, a miracle, really.

Looking back, I am confident that this experience happened for a reason.  I can't speak for my mom, or anyone else in my family, but I know that I have grown up more than ever this summer.  In my list-loving fashion, here are a few things I now know for sure:

1.  My mom is one tough lady.  I was in awe with her strength in hearing this news.  She was the most positive, enlightened person of all of us.  I learned so much from watching her go through what was the most scary diagnosis.  I'll never forget that.

2. Family IS the most important.  I will do anything for any of them, and I know the same is true from them.

3. Be generous with your love.  Life really does throw you curve balls when you least expect them.  Be there when it matters, and be there when it doesn't matter.  Just be there.

4. No regrets.  Say what you mean, mean what you say.  Don't wait for the perfect moment.

5. Be grateful for what you have. Always.

6. Life is precious.

7. Don't be afraid to talk to people who are hurting-- it's better to say something than nothing.  I found that it's awkward and hard to tell people when you are going through a tough time.  But it's so nice to talk about it, and not have the dark cloud looming over you. I'll hope I can remember this when I know someone is hurting.

8. On that note, you never really know what someone is going through.

9. Call, text, write, email, whatever it takes.  Say something so that people know you care.

10. Have faith.  Be positive.

I feel so blessed to have a happy ending to my family's story.  And I know that it's not always the case, and I am beyond thankful for everyone who has supported me through those 7 weeks.

2 weeks after finding out my mom was healthy, her dad, my grandpa, was diagnosed with lung cancer. Life is full of twists and turns, but in my opinion, it's all about perspective.

Fall Photo Dump.

I've never really been a fan of the hot weather.  And as we all know, this summer was brutal.  The best part about a brutal summer?  It sure makes fall seem extra awesome.  I've been doing my best to soak it all in for as long as it lasts.
Where I'm living now, I see hot air balloons all of the time.  This one looks far away, but I could see the people inside from this close! I've always wondered what it would be like to ride it up a balloon on a crisp fall morning. I'd be paranoid a strong gust of wind would tip that basket right over though....

Fall = soup.  Has anyone else see these Andy Worhol inspired Campbell's soup cans?  I'm sure everyone in Target thought I was nutso for taking pictures of soup cans, but it's the little things.  I just want to rip off all those labels and.... yeah, I haven't gotten that far.  Love 'em, though.

We took our niece to the Cider Mill last weekend, and although she didn't have the best time, we sure loved the donuts and cider slush.  I want to find an apple orchard to visit, but I haven't heard of any around here.  Anyone?

After 500 miles (what the what?@!) in my trusty Christmas present shoes from J, I got myself some new kicks.  I've been researching like crazy trying to find the best-rated, most-liked, most-colorful, best-priced, longest-lasting..... etc. shoes EVER.  J thinks I'm crazy.  I overthink things like this to the nth degree and always end up going with my first choice anyways.  I just have to make absolutely sure that there is no other better option out there.  These are the same shoe I had before, but the updated version, which is slightly more colorful.  I was refitted and went up 1/2 a size.  So far, so good.

First race of the season, a 10K.  I hadn't been training as much as I had hoped due to massive amounts of life changes, but I'm pretty proud of my finish! The course was great, and the weather was great.  I was so glad J came with me and met me at the end of the race.  Loved it.

It hadn't rained in like 3 months, then it decided to rain for 5 minutes on my drive home from work.  This happend.  HUH?! I was so confused on what to do, I just laughed and kept going.

A new-found trail that makes my day everytime I'm on it.

Boom! I know I've been talking about running a lot lately on this blog, but I'm loving training for the 1/2 marathon.  I NEVER thought I would say that. It has seriously relaxed me and been the best de-stresser I could have wished for during this crazy transition in life.  I whipped this out a week ago.

The next day, Monday, I got my first cold of the school year.  I'm surprised it hadn't happened earlier.  This weekend is looking to be a good one- good times catching up with my bestie last night, and a long run with her this morning as well (she's like a beast-- pregnant and running a 1/2!)- tonight a date night, and tomorrow the football game with some great friends I haven't seen in a while.

Hope your weekend is a great one!
